NYC Forest Assessment 2.0 Protocol and Materials

NYC Forest Assessment 2.0 Protocol and Materials

          Article summary

This document provides a standardized field protocol for sampling urban forested natural areas using a fixed-area plot design. The method emphasizes data collection on plant species composition and abundance across all forest layers, as well as downed woody material (coarse woody debris, leaf litter, and duff). It is most appropriate for upland forest communities.

In addition to the field protocol, supporting resources are included such as datasheets, a Survey123 form template, detailed equipment lists, project setup guidance, and a summary of the ecological information that can be derived from the collected data. Instructions and modified datasheets are also provided for adapting this protocol into a permanent plot monitoring framework, along with other supplemental materials.

This protocol is an updated and refined version of the Upland and Forest Ecological Assessment Protocol for New York City.
